Princess Diana’s ‘favourite’ breakfast
The late Princess of Wales was well known for her interest in wellness, embracing holistic therapies like aromatherapy and acupuncture.
It’s no surprise, then, that she also enjoyed a variety of “super healthy” foods — particularly her favourite breakfast, which she reportedly discovered in the 1990s.
Princess Diana is said to have started eating overnight oats after a trip to Switzerland during that decade.
On his YouTube channel, former royal chef Darren McGrady revealed that this simple yet nutritious meal was something she ate “every day” or on “most mornings” while at Kensington Palace.
He described the breakfast staple as “healthy and packed with protein and nutrients,” noting that it has also become a favourite among celebrities and social media influencers today.
Princess Diana’s ‘Favourite’ Dish Now Loved by Celebrities
Cameron Diaz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Joe Wicks, and Victoria Beckham are all said to be big fans of this wholesome, nutritious meal.
Overnight oats require no cooking and can be easily prepared the night before for a quick and healthy breakfast.
To make them, simply soak oatmeal in your choice of liquid—such as milk, water, or juice—overnight, and enjoy a delicious, ready-to-eat meal in the morning.
Overnight oats absorb the moisture from the liquids, becoming thicker and more filling by morning. Yogurt can even be used in place of liquids for a creamier texture.
Many fans of the dish like to add fruits, seeds, nuts, or preserves once they take it out of the fridge, making it both nutritious and customizable.
Nutritionists have praised overnight oats as one of the healthiest breakfasts available, noting its potential to reduce the risk of diabetes, obesity, and high cholesterol.
Royal Chef’s Special Recipe Revealed
In his recipe, former royal chef Darren McGrady shared that Princess Diana’s morning oats often included blueberries and fresh walnuts.
In a YouTube video, he recalled that Diana was “looking the best she ever did” during the period she enjoyed overnight oats along with other wholesome meals.
“She was embracing healthy eating — her go-to breakfast was overnight oats,” Darren explained.
He added, “Today, overnight oats are incredibly popular. You can’t scroll through social media without seeing recipes for them. But Princess Diana was eating overnight oats nearly 20 years earlier, back in 1993.”

Diana’s Wholesome Morning Staple
Darren McGrady explained how Princess Diana discovered this nourishing breakfast.
“They were originally called Bircher muesli, invented by a Swiss nutritionist who believed the ingredients were incredibly healthy,” he said.
Darren’s special recipe for Diana featured rolled oats soaked in fresh orange juice, mixed with yogurt, raw honey, half a grated Honeycrisp apple, the juice of one lemon, one cup of fresh blueberries, and half a cup of toasted walnuts.
He then garnished the dish with extra walnuts and blueberries — a truly delicious and nutritious morning treat!
This wholesome breakfast was first created by Dr. Maximilian Oskar Bircher-Benner in the early 20th century and remains a timeless classic.
